Schedule and Events

Summer Schedule

In 2008, the REU in HCI program at Virginia Tech will run from May 19 to July 10. The participants will go through orientation and startup events that acclimate themselves to the research environment in the Center for HCI and Virginia Tech. Thereafter, students will work with individual faculty members and their research teams on projects of their selection, coming together for research and social meetings several times each week.

Events

There will be several events throughout the year of potential interest to REU in HCI participants and their mentors and friends. Other social and academically enriching events will be added closer to the start of the program.

  • The VTURCS Research Symposium (Sometime in April) is open to all participants as an introduction to the undergraduate research projects taking place at Virginia Tech. It is expected that some members of the REU in HCI program will take part in this symposium and others will attend to observe. A reception for all attendees will take part after the symposium.
  • Housing move-in weekend (May 16-18, 2008) gives all participants and their friends and family the opportunity to meet and get to know each other. Highlighted by a Saturday night party, we expect this event will help forge intellectual and social bonds between participants that will last through the summer and beyond.
  • Orientation Week (May 19-23, 2008) introduces students to each other, their mentors, research projects, the campus, and beyond.
  • Memorial Day (May 26, 2008)
  • Independence Day (July 4, 2008)
  • REU in HCI mid-term report (June 22, 2008) provides both faculty members and undergrad participants an informal forum for sharing progress, obstacles, and success stories experienced in the program to this point.
  • The REU in HCI Research Symposium (July 10, 2008) provides participants with the opportunity to present their work to the research community. A panel of distinguished guests, both from Virginia Tech and from the participants' home universities will be invited and encouraged to attend. Friends and families of the participants are also invited to this event.
  • Housing Departure (July 11-12, 2008)
Currently the dates are tentative and may be subject to change.
